Rose-Hulman Ventures Announces One of its Largest Investments
in Home Data Source, an Indianapolis-Based Company

Rose-Hulman Ventures, a technology-based incubator and product development center, announced it is providing technical and financial assistance to Home Data Source, LLC of Indianapolis for the development of its Health eView™ system, the first-ever home monitoring system for aging adults.  Rose-Hulman Ventures has invested approximately $1.5 million monetary support and in-kind development assistance, for hardware and software development and business assistance, according to Rose-Hulman Ventures president, Jim Eifert.  “This is one of our largest investments in a single company to date,” said Eifert.

“Home Data Source is targeting a largely untapped segment of the market,” said Eifert.  “Tim Bruemmer, president of Home Data Source, and his colleagues have successfully launched other start-ups.  Their first company, Sagian, now a division of Beckman-Coulter, Inc., is also based in Indianapolis. We are pleased to enter into a strategic partnership with them.”

Home Data Source, LLC (HDS), founded in June 2001, addresses the needs of a growing population segment of individuals 60+ years old.  With the development of the Health eView system, HDS hopes to help older adults maintain the highest quality of life and independent living. The state-of-the-art system is comprised of non-invasive sensors that are deployed in the home to gather and monitor daily activity patterns of older adults.  The Health eView system requires no modification to the person’s habits, does not require them to wear special equipment, and does not use cameras.   

The technology analyzes and summarizes the information it obtains to provide behavioral trend histories and flags status changes that can be used by adult children, older adults, and health care providers. The information is available via a secure Internet site.  

 “Until recently, it would have been extremely difficult to deploy this type of technology in the home environment,” explains Tim Bruemmer.  “Today, using wireless and Internet capabilities, we can provide unobtrusive technology with the intelligence to enhance health care and to help families stay connected – especially when the adult child and parent live at a distance from one another.  Bruemmer added, “We are glad to have the support and confidence of Rose-Hulman Ventures. They have proven to be a valuable partner for us.”

The Health eView system will be available for purchase in the summer of 2003.
