Rose-Hulman Team Scopes for Better
Surgical Procedures
NICO, an Indianapolis-based
start-up company, is developing a new
surgical tool that may prove to be the
missing cornerstone of the neurosurgical
market. The founders of NICO are building on
a long history in various tissue excision
markets to develop the intercranial device.
This high-speed device focuses on the
removal of tumors from the brain and central
nervous system. It enables a faster, cleaner
procedure with less trauma to the
surrounding tissue and a quicker recovery
time for patients.
As one of the primary entities responsible
for design and functionality, RHV’s goal is
to develop the device with improved control
in tissue removal in a less invasive way
while remaining cost-effective. Biomedical
and mechanical engineering students, under
the guidance of RHV project manager Brian
Dougherty, focus on high-level design
concepts that adapt a proven tissue excision
technology into the device, detailed design
work and validation of performance
specifications.
